The following is a brief description of several job positions that may be present in a modern day household. These definitions are in no way binding. Many job responsibilities overlap and these "titles" may hold different meanings around the world. All salary ranges are approximate and do not take into account benefits, bonuses, and or experience levels.

Estate Manager: Also referred to as Butler, Major Domo, or Household Administrator, is responsible for the smooth operation of the employer's residence(s). Duties entail hiring, training, and termination of the staff members, interviewing and supervising all outside contractors, managing of household accounts, orchestration of functions, stocking and care of the wine cellar, scheduling preventative maintenance for the home and autos, and in general , making sure that his/her employers life is as carefree as possible. The Estate Manager wears many hats, and is a stickler for detail, detail, detail. Salaries for this position range from $65,000 to well over $150,000 depending on the experience level, living arrangements, benefits, and the scope of the assignment.

Houseman: This position may include more of the "hands on" duties for daily care of the home. This may include anything from filling in for the housekeeper if they call in sick to helping the chef in preparation for a formal dinner party. The responsibilities can vary greatly depending on the type of household and the employer requirements. If it is an extremely casual home the job could encompass a range of responsibilities from handyman to personal assistant. In following with the varied job duties also comes a varied salary range; anywhere from $40,000 to $70,000.

Personal Assistant: This position is also known as a Social Secretary, Family Assistant, or Executive Assistant. This position entails more of a one on one relationship with the employer. Duties would include keeping of the family agenda, arranging for reservations of various events, travel bookings, tending to the needs of guests, event planning, some secretarial responsibilities, gift shopping, and running errands of all types. The salary range for this position is between $52,000 and up depending on experience and the assignment.

Chef: The household chef is responsible for anything food or kitchen related. They will handle all meals for the family and possibly the staff, organization and clean-up of the kitchen, shopping for all food related supplies and menu planning. Party's, holiday meals, and special functions are also the chefs responsibility. The salary range is between $52,000 to $100,000+ depending on experience and scope of the job.

Driver/Security: This position can be either one position or two separate positions depending on the needs of the employer. A driver will chauffeur family and guests upon request and are also responsible for the maintenance of all vehicles. A personal protection officer may be the driver, a chaperone, or stationary at the residence, possibly working with a team. Security personnel will usually have some type of government background. Salary range is $45,000 to $75,000.

Couple/Team: These positions will take on the full responsibilities of running a household. Some of the duties that may be included would be: housekeeping, cooking, auto care, gardening, child care, event planning, expense reports, elderly care ,and in some cases being the personal assistant as well. This position can entail many different responsibilities depending on the needs of the employer. This is usually a live-in position. Salary is wide ranging based on the duties and housing for the couple.  Typical is $72,000 to $100,000+ annually.
